The Risk

Since the mid-1990s, there has been systematic racism in urban communities. Atlanta and Detroit suffer from: High Youth Unemployment Child Poverty Low-Median Household Incomes Under-Resourced Schools Redlining Generational Poverty Negative Media Sterotypes of Their Community and a Lack of Socioeconomic Mobility Both cities experience many issues, Que Blackout aims to address the poverty, education, and employment challenges our youth face. Many students spend out-of-school time on work, childcare responsibilities, or other family obligations.

What Does All That Mean?

1. What are performing arts? It's singing, acting, dancing, spoken word...; if you're on stage entertaining people, it's performing arts.

2. What are media arts? It is the opposite if you are behind the scenes making the music and microphones heard, lighting the stage, calling the show, and making the magic happen on stage; it's media art. We're like the Men In Black (we literally wear black) behind the scenes keeping the show in order.

3. So what is broadcasting? As far as behind the scenes and on stage goes, it can be a hybrib; depending on the job, you can be out front as a reporter or host, behind the scenes as a graphic designer, videographer, engineer, or both, like a producer and journalist. If you send contant to people who haven't entered a performance space and you get it in people's hands you're in broadcasting
